Lake Guri, Venezuela
Lake Guri, Venezuela
June 13, 2004
Over the years, my world travels as a military officer and now most recently as a manager in an international corporation has provided me the opportunity to fish some exotic waters. My most recent trip in quest of Peacockbass took me and six of my co-workers to Lake Guri in the Amazon region of extreme southeastern Venezuela. After arriving in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela via commercial airliner, we boarded a couple of bush planes for the one hour flight to the Headwaters Fishing Camp at the southern end of the 1800 square mile lake. The area of the lake where the Rio Caroni and the Rio Paragua enter are some of the most productive Peacockbass waters in South America. With our expert guides, fish caught in the 5 to 10 pound category were too numerous to count. All seven of us caught at least one twelve pounder and we had four catches over 16 pounds. On the morning of our last day, using a white spinner bait, baitcasting reel and my G. Loomis MBR 783C baitcasting rod I landed the largest fish of the trip; a 16 and a half pound beauty. I'm here to tell you that fish put a serious bend in my IMX rod but it had the backbone to enable me to manuever that fish away from the numerous trees and rocks. The extreme light weight, and strength of the rod was much appreciated after a long day of "ripping" lures and hauling in feisty Peacocks.
